PhD in Germany Scholarship 2025 by Forschungszentrum Jülich

In a thrilling move toward a carbon-neutral future, Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Institute of Energy Technologies – Fundamentals of Electrochemistry (IET-1) has announced a fully funded doctoral position that could revolutionize the way we use energy. If you’ve ever dreamed of turning climate villains like CO₂ into renewable heroes or simulating complex systems with AI-powered digital twins, your moment is here!

The Mission: Reinvent the Energy Equation

Through the PHOENIX – Launch Space Power-to-X joint project, backed by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, this PhD position will place you at the heart of Europe’s green transformation. You’ll join an elite team building digital twins and diagnostic systems for SOEC and SOFC Power-to-X technologies—paving the way for clean hydrogen production, smarter energy storage, and intelligent grid systems.

This is more than a doctoral project—it’s your chance to shape the future of climate technology.

What You’ll Be Doing?

  • Develop sensor-based high-temperature testing systems for next-gen electrolysis and fuel cells.
  • Design and conduct long-term experiments to capture real-world operational insights.
  • Build model- and data-driven algorithms for fault detection and system health checks.
  • Deploy your systems on edge hardware for real-time optimization and control.
  • Create a full-fledged digital twin for the reversible solid oxide cell (rSOC) system.
  • Present findings globally and publish in top-tier journals.
  • Mentor budding researchers and work closely with interdisciplinary experts.

Who Should Apply?

  • Master’s degree holders in mechanical, chemical, process, or energy engineering.
  • Strong background in thermodynamics, heat transfer, process simulation, and software tools like Matlab, Simulink, or Python.
  • Bonus if you have prior exposure to solid oxide electrolysis/fuel cells and electrochemistry.
  • Fluent in German and English, with strong analytical and communication skills.

What You’ll Get?

  • Monthly salary according to TVöD-Bund E13 (75%) plus 60% Christmas bonus.
  • Cutting-edge research environment in one of Europe’s largest scientific institutions.
  • Full support through JuDocS—a structured doctoral training program with networking, career coaching, and workshops.
  • Travel to international conferences, flexible work models, 30+ holidays per year, and on-campus perks.
